DVT: Current Guidelines for Prevention of Deep Venous Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism in the Inpatient Population

It is well-established that the use of antithrombotic prophylaxis reduces venous thromboembolic events (VTEs) and that untreated VTEs produce long-term morbidity from post-thrombolic syndromes. In this CME offering, Dr. Haynes discusses some classic DVT claims. Utilizing the 7 th Annual ACCP Conference consensus statement, he suggests some best practices for managing both surgical and medical patients in the hospital setting. (Please note: CME credit for this test can only be given to our insureds)

At the conclusion of this activity physicians should be able to:

  • Outline current recommendations for DVT prophylaxis in the hospitalized medical patient.
  • Outline current recommendations for DVT prophylaxis in the hospitalized surgical patient
  • Discuss measures that should be instituted in all hospital admissions to reduce the risk of VTE.
  • Describe appropriate pharmacologic VTE prophylaxis monitoring systems.
  • Describe the established contraindications for pharmacologic VTE prophylaxis.
